EXEGESIS

Theogony 53–62·Early Greek hexameter

A forgetting of ills

In Pieria, Mnemosyne, who reigns over the hills of Eleuther, mingles with Zeus and bears nine daughters of one mind, their hearts set on song. The Greek names that birth λησμοσύνην τε κακῶν ἄμπαυμά τε μερμηράων: a forgetting of ills and a rest from sorrow. Established text of the genealogy. The paradox, that memory’s daughters are a forgetting, is a reading.
