Deep Thought has just spoken Forty-two. The listeners protest. He checks the Answer, affirms it, and names the failure: they have never actually known what the question is. Established novel dialogue. The scene separates Answer from Question. A later sum that makes the English word QUESTION total 42 is a modern mapping. Adams did not claim it.
